The cameras are marketed as a method of reducing crime through constant surveillance, but we believe the infringement on our privacy is much more dangerous. The network of over 100,000 cameras in the United States records the license plates of every car that passes, as well as facial recognition information of the passengers and other identifying features of the vehicle. While these records are supposedly only accessible for local law enforcement for the purpose of a criminal investigation, there have been many instances demonstrating otherwise. Flock Safety cameras have been accessed by federal agencies such as ICE, Flock Safety employees without warrants, and by law enforcement officers to target lawful protestors, stalk an ex-girlfriend, and stalk a woman seeking a legal abortion. Every one of these cases presents a very serious threat to our 4th amendment rights, and are most likely only the beginning of our government’s abuse of this unsanctioned technology.
